Getting Your Krones Contiform Heat Just Right
If you’ve spent any time around a Krones Contiform, you know that keeping a steady heat profile is basically a constant battle against heat loss. You’re using shortwave infrared lamps to get those preforms soft enough to blow, but you have to do it without melting the necks. It’s a delicate balance. And let’s be honest—OEM prices can be a nightmare. When the costs spike, you need a replacement that actually works without causing a headache on the line. The deal with power and wattage Here’s the thing: wattage isn’t just a number on a box. If you throw in a lamp with the wrong specs, you’ll start seeing “pearling” or weird, uneven walls in your bottles. Not great. We make sure our lamps match the voltage and wattage of your Contiform oven exactly. We use high-wattage quartz tubes that punch through the PET wall quickly. We also obsess over the resistance values. Why? Because we don’t want your power controllers tripping or trying to overcompensate halfway through a shift. The fit and the glass We use heavy-wall quartz glass because these things take a beating. Rapid cycling creates intense thermal stress, and cheap glass just won’t hold up. Then there’s the connectors—usually R7s or SK15. We machine these to be tight. If a lamp is loose in the socket, it arcs. Once it starts arcing, it burns the socket out, and now you’ve got a much bigger problem than just a dead bulb. Plus, we apply specific coatings to the quartz. This shifts the infrared spectrum so the PET absorbs the heat better. It means more energy goes into the plastic and less of it just wastes away heating up the oven walls. Getting them on the floor Swapping these out is easy. You pull the old tube, wire in the new one, and you’re back in business. But a quick word of advice: check your cooling blowers first. These high-density lamps put a lot of pressure on your ventilation. If your blowers are clogged with dust, the lamp is going to “heat soak” and burn out way too fast. Give your airflow a once-over before you start swapping. It’ll save you a lot of frustration down the road.
